“start over” is four minutes and forty four seconds of a man deciding to rebuild.

crüx is heating up. “start over,” out now with tgwog, luckey and mixedmatches, is the kind of single that makes people who were half paying attention sit up and start over themselves.

He is not your regular artist. Where most of his peers pick a lane and stay in it, crüx pushes at the edges of the song, and about halfway through “start over” he gets genuinely hardcore with it. That turn is the reason this one travels.

I joke about whether it’s okay for another man to sing to me softly. It’s a bit. Truth is he sings with pain, and he puts the melody exactly where a bar should go without making a show of it.

The premise underneath is old as the form. She said she’d stay. She didn’t. What crüx does with it is the interesting part. He never raises his voice at the situation. There is no revenge verse, no scoreboard. He works through it out loud and arrives at the only conclusion available: take the heart of chrome out and start over.

Sit with that image a second. Not a broken heart. A replaceable one. Something you can unbolt and swap when it stops doing the job.

And he keeps the metal running the whole way through. The heart is chrome, then it’s a heart he got shot in, then the feeling itself shows up as a gun in the holster, guard up, safety off. Somewhere in there he puts the heart in a box and hands it to her anyway. Armor and wound are the same object in this song and crüx never separates them, because they were never separate to begin with.

Four days out it was already moving on its own. Reposts from every direction, comment sections filling up, the kind of first week that does not come from a schedule. That happens when a song lands on people who needed it that week.

crüx has been around. This is not a debut and it does not sound like one. What “start over” sounds like is an artist who stopped waiting for permission and found out the room was already listening.
